Last Wednesday my wife underwent abdominal surgery at WVU in Morgantown, West Virginia. When someone you care about is heading into surgery, it does not matter how many times doctors tell you everything is routine. You still spend the day sitting around wondering when medical science became a spectator sport. Thankfully, everything went according to plan. The doctors, nurses, and staff at WVU were excellent from start to finish. After a long day of waiting rooms, hospital hallways, and chairs apparently designed by medieval torture experts, we were finally able to head home. Recovery has been going very well. She’s getting around pretty decent, moving more each day, and slowly returning to normal activities. She’s still taking it easy and not pushing herself too hard, which is probably a good idea considering her body is currently busy repairing itself. There is still some soreness, which is expected after abdominal surgery, but every day seems a little better than the last. The worst part appears to be behind us, and that’s a relief after the stress leading up to the procedure. For now we’re focusing on rest, recovery, and taking things one day at a time. Sometimes the best update you can give is that everything went well and life is slowly getting back to normal. After the past week, normal sounds pretty good.
