Last night was one of those nights that you don’t forget. I was sitting at home scrolling through my phone, thinking it was just another summer storm, maybe some heavy rain and thunder—nothing out of the ordinary. But by the time I started seeing videos and photos from Wheeling and Triadelphia, West Virginia, it was clear this was something way beyond that.
We’re talking major flooding. Not just some water in the road—whole houses were pulled off their foundations like they were made of paper. Cars floated down the street like bath toys. I even saw a shipping container get washed away like it was nothing. You expect to see that kind of chaos in a movie or on the news from some far-off place, not right here in the Ohio Valley.
It’s hard to wrap your head around just how fast it all happened. One minute it was raining, the next minute entire neighborhoods were underwater. People barely had time to grab their pets or their kids before the water came rushing in. And some didn’t even get that chance.
The worst part? Lives were lost. People are still missing. Families are out there today searching for answers, searching for loved ones. It’s heartbreaking. You think of those quiet towns, the little streets you’ve driven down a hundred times, and now they look like war zones.
I don’t have some deep message or perfect way to end this. I’m just… shaken. I feel lucky to be safe, but guilty that so many others weren’t. All I know is, if you’re reading this and you’re in the area—check in on your people. Help if you can. Donate, volunteer, do whatever. Because right now, a whole lot of folks are trying to rebuild their lives from the mud.
