The Older I Get, The More I Love Being Alone

What do you love now, that you hated when you were younger?

When I was younger, being alone felt like losing. If I wasn’t out somewhere, hanging around people, or constantly doing something, it felt like I was missing out. Silence was awkward. A free weekend sounded like a punishment.

Now? Being alone is one of my favorite things.

Not because I hate people. I just got tired of the noise.

The older you get, the easier it is to spot the difference between people who add something to your life and people who just consume your time. Drama gets old. Fake conversations get old. The competition over who has the busiest life or the loudest opinion gets old. Eventually you realize peace is worth a lot more than popularity.

These days, a quiet evening with my dogs, a good movie, some music, or tinkering with my website beats forcing small talk with people I’d forget a week later. Give me an old computer, a Linux terminal, and the sound of nothing happening. That’s a pretty solid night.

Being alone also gives you room to think. You figure out who you are when nobody’s watching. There’s no audience, no performance, no need to impress anyone. Just you and your own thoughts. It turns out that’s not lonely. It’s freedom.

Maybe that’s just part of getting older. You stop chasing crowds and start protecting your peace. You realize your time is limited, and wasting it on people who drain your energy is a terrible investment.

Funny how life works. The thing I used to avoid has become the thing I appreciate the most.

Sometimes the best company is no company at all.
