Dropping Social Media

I’m thinking about leaving almost all social media. I’ll probably keep either Mastodon or Bluesky, because apparently I still need one small window into the internet to occasionally yell at strangers. Everything else can go. I’m tired of algorithms deciding what I should see, endless scrolling, rage bait, ads pretending to be content, and the constant demand to keep looking at the screen like Big Brother installed a notification system in my pocket.

I’m also going back to RSS feeds as much as possible. Old-school internet technology still works, which is inconvenient for the companies that spent years convincing us we needed an app, an account, a profile, and seventeen notifications just to read a fucking website. RSS lets me choose what I want to read instead of having some algorithm decide what will piss me off enough to keep scrolling.

I want websites again. Bookmarks. RSS feeds. Actual blogs. A browser. Maybe one social network that doesn’t make me feel like I’ve wandered into the digital equivalent of a shopping mall food court during a fire alarm. The internet was better when you had to go looking for things instead of everything chasing you down.
