Gen X And The Lost Art Of Working

Daily writing prompt
How does your mindset affect your financial success?

Your mindset has a hell of a lot to do with your financial success.

I’m Gen X. I grew up with the basic understanding that if you wanted something, you worked for it. Nobody was standing around waiting to hand you a trophy because you showed up. You showed up, you did the job, you got paid. Revolutionary concept, apparently.

Work ethic matters. Showing up matters. Doing the job right matters. Learning how to live without buying every shiny piece of garbage that comes along matters. And understanding that money doesn’t magically appear because you want something is probably useful too.

I’ve never believed that I’m entitled to anything just because I exist. If I want more money, I figure out how to earn more. If I want something, I save for it. If I screw something up, I deal with it. That’s just how life works.

Too many people seem to think financial success is supposed to happen without the uncomfortable parts. They want the house, the car, the vacations and the newest phone, but somehow the work, patience, sacrifice and responsibility got lost somewhere along the way.

And before somebody starts screaming about “kids today,” I’m not saying every younger person is lazy. There are plenty of hard-working younger people. But there is definitely a different attitude floating around now. Everything has to be faster, easier and more convenient. Apparently patience is now an outdated operating system.

Your mindset determines how you handle money. Do you spend everything you make? Do you complain that you don’t have enough while constantly buying shit you don’t need? Do you blame everyone else? Or do you look at your situation and figure out what you can actually control?

That last one is where financial success starts.

You don’t need to be rich. You need to be disciplined. You need to understand the difference between a want and a need. You need to work when you don’t feel like working. You need to save when spending would be more fun. You need to accept that sometimes you simply can’t afford something.

That isn’t deprivation. That’s adulthood.

My generation grew up watching technology go from rotary phones and cassette tapes to computers in our pockets. We learned to adapt because nobody was going to stop the world and explain everything to us. You figured shit out.

That mindset carries over into money.

Work hard. Spend less than you make. Don’t expect somebody else to fix your problems. Learn from your mistakes. Keep moving.

It’s not glamorous. It’s not a TikTok financial hack. There’s no secret seven-step millionaire formula.

It’s just work.

Funny how the boring stuff keeps working.
