The exact job I’m already doing. I’m a Meals on Wheels driver, and honestly, I don’t need some fancy job title or a corner office to make it worthwhile.

I get out in public every day. I talk to people. Real people. Not coworkers staring at a screen pretending to be productive while somebody schedules another pointless meeting. The seniors I deliver to are genuinely happy to see me, and I’m happy to see them. Some of them might not have much human interaction that day, so that few minutes at their door actually matters. Sometimes I’m delivering a meal. Sometimes I’m checking to make sure they’re okay. Sometimes I’m just standing there talking bullshit about whatever comes up. That’s part of the job too.

I’m basically my own boss while I’m out on the route. I know where I need to go, I get my work done, and I’m not sitting under fluorescent lights being micromanaged by someone who thinks productivity is measured by how often they walk past your desk.

And the biggest thing is that I’m actually helping people. Meals, health and safety checks, and a little bit of friendship. None of that sounds impressive on LinkedIn, because apparently helping another human being is less marketable than “synergy” and “team optimization.” But I know what the work means.

So if you gave me the choice of doing something else for the exact same money, I’d still be driving Meals on Wheels.

Sometimes the job you already have is actually the right one.
