Who Has Time to Read?

Daily writing prompt
What’s the longest book you’ve ever read?

What’s the longest book you’ve ever read? I don’t have a fucking clue. I don’t have time to read a book. I see people talking about books they’re reading and they’ll casually mention something like, “Yeah, I just finished this 800-page novel.” Eight hundred pages? When the hell did you find the time to do that?

I barely have enough time to sit down without immediately remembering something else I’m supposed to be doing. There’s work, errands, chores, dogs, eating, sleeping, and all the other bullshit that somehow manages to consume an entire day. And then somebody expects me to pick up a 700-page book and start reading? Nope.

I like reading. I really do. I just don’t seem to have the attention span or the available time to commit to some enormous literary brick for the next three weeks. I can spend an hour reading random shit on the internet without even realizing it. I can fall down some completely useless rabbit hole about some obscure subject that I didn’t even know existed five minutes earlier. But give me an actual book and suddenly I’m busy.

Maybe I’ll read a chapter before bed. Then I’ll read three pages, put the book down, look at my phone, and somehow forty-five minutes disappears while I’m watching a video of somebody restoring a 1987 VCR. This is apparently how I spend my life now.

So what’s the longest book you’ve ever read? And more importantly, how the hell did you find the time?
