We Were Warned and Still Hit Snooze

I woke up, hit play, and got smacked in the face by The Idiots Are Taking Over by NOFX like it was still 2003 and nothing had improved. Turns out, nothing has improved. Cute.

There’s something almost comforting about a song that predicted the slow-motion circus we’re all living in now. Not comforting in a warm, fuzzy way. More like, “at least someone saw the train coming before it hit us all.” I respect that level of pessimism. It ages well.

The lyrics aren’t subtle. They weren’t subtle back then either, but now they feel less like satire and more like a news recap. Misinformation everywhere. Loud idiots getting promoted to experts. People clapping like trained seals while everything quietly burns behind them. It’s not even shocking anymore. It’s just Tuesday.

What gets me is how casual it all feels now. Back then, this kind of message had bite. It felt rebellious. Now it’s just…background noise. Like yeah, of course the dumbest voices are the loudest. Of course truth is optional. Of course nobody reads past headlines. We’ve built a system where confidence beats competence every single time, and then we act surprised when things fall apart.

I’m not even mad about it. That phase passed. This is more like watching a bad movie you can’t turn off. You already know how it ends, but you stick around anyway just to see how ridiculous it gets. Spoiler: it always gets worse.

And the real kicker? People think they’re immune to it. Everyone assumes they’re the exception. They’re not the idiot. It’s always the other guy. Meanwhile, the bar keeps dropping and somehow we keep limboing under it like it’s a sport.

So yeah, great song to start the day. Nothing like a little existential dread with your caffeine. Really sets the tone. Makes you want to go out there and…participate in society, I guess. Or at least survive it without screaming into a pillow.

If there’s any upside, it’s this: awareness still exists. Barely. Songs like this don’t fix anything, but they do remind you you’re not crazy for noticing the pattern. That’s about as close to comfort as we get these days.

Anyway, the idiots aren’t “taking over.” They took over a while ago. We’re just late to the meeting.
